WORKS ON PAPER AND CANVAS

“Of all the arts, abstract painting is the most difficult. It demands that you know how to draw well, that you have a heightened sensitivity of composition and for colors, and that you be a true poet. This last is essential." — Wassily Kandinsky

My abstract Works on Paper and Canvas (usually larger than 22" x 32" paper format) share the same process. The works on paper came first and were my first introduction to painting with oil as a student at the Art Student League in NY. Plus, they were portable. Space and storage is always a consideration, and working on paper was a simple solution until my desire to work larger demanded I stretch my own canvases. The plasticity and immediacy of paint drives my expression and captures the connection I feel to specific locations. Using the language of colors, shapes, energy, rhythm, and mood I compose spontaneously — capturing luminosity with my color choices and amplifying movement and energy with aggressive mark making. Brush stokes are in juxtaposition against crisp marks made with graphite or charcoal. Like the Abstract Expressionists of the New York School, my art is process driven.
